Album review #2: Jokers In Trousers mixtape review

Ever since the explosion of social networking sites, the creation and distrubution of music has reached a wider range of people; this includes young adults who are looking to create music for the fun of it. One such site which has become a tool to spread music is tumblr. Jokers In Trousers, a hip-hop group, even use tumblr (among other sites) to spread their music, which includes their self-titled EP.

Jokers In Trousers is an all female hip-hop group made up of four members. To me, they resemble a mixture of Tyler, the Creator and Kreayshawn (they’re pretty much a less ghetto version of White Girl Mob). I find their female perspective refreshing in the world of hip-hop. They are fairly young, so they hardly take their music seriously. However, this is not a negative. Not only is their music somewhat fun, but their attitudes seem to reflect an ironic outlook on modern hip-hop. They overuse the word “swag” and spit out witty, nonsensical lyrics, all while not taking themselves seriously. One of the highlights of the mixtape, “Charnsuka”, is filled humorous (if not head-scratching) quips, such as “I’d drink his bath water” and also a Jesse Slaughter reference. Another decent track to me was “Roger Dat”. This tracked represented most what these girls were mainly about. It showcased the ladies rapping over a familiar beat, with comments about themselves and how people perceive them. They engage in self-mockery when they admit that they themselves don’t have swag. Their mentions of past relationships also reflect a not only an unique female perspective in the world of hip-hop, but also the feelings of the rappers. They also blow off the people who criticize their music. They seem to not care what people think of them or their music, and just have fun with what they’re doing, which I admire.

Though the album was fun, it did have low points. Some of the lyrical content was humorous, but often times there seemed to be no effort in the lyrics. Another problem was that on most songs, the girls seemed bored while rapping, which made some parts actually boring; there didn’t seem to be much emotion put into the music. The song where this seemed most prominent was the third track, “Kush”. Their boring approach to rapping, combined with their lack of flow, pretty much ruined the positive aspects of their work.

Though I tend to not listen to this mixtape in a serious nature, the negative points seem to outweigh the good points. So that is why I give the Jokers In Trousers EP a 5/10. Though not everyone will find this mixtape enjoyably, it is still a fun an honest album to listen to (though I wouldn’t reply it that often myself). Hopefully next time the group will express themselves more emotionally in the music.

The thing such as is also (as well as) although another thing was such like as it was. I didn’t enjoy it because as well as not grammaring, the sentence structure was another thing I did not tend to like in the nature of not enjoying it.
